Review of The Rite (2011) by Josh B — 13 Jul 2011
Man what ever happened to exorcism movies? They used to scare me to death! The Exorcist, Emily Rose, REC 2, Poltergeist, The Omen, (even though I wasn't too crazy about Omen and Poltergeist) they were all terrifying to see. Now we have the Rite, directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408) who I can see gives an effort here, but unfortunately brings nothing new to the table when it comes to an exorcism film.
The story revolves around a young priest who goes to Rome to study exorcism at the Vatican even though he has doubts of his beliefs. He meets a man who begins to perform exorcisms with him. Most of the acting is pretty bad, the story is pretty lame (and at times boring), and of all the things it wasn't, it also wasn't scary (which is a lot to say because everything scares me! Steve Martin's face scares me.).
There's only one thing in this film that I can give credit to: Anthony Hopkins' (The Silence of the Lambs) performance. He was just as good as he was in any other movie he's ever been in and yet, thats still not good enough to save this movie from the absolute crap that this is. My advice is: skip it.
The Rite: 4/10.
Josh.
