Review of The Rite (1969) by Mike D — 10 Dec 2011
'The Rite' is surely not among the top exorcist-based films released over the past few years. Everything about it, from the slow pacing to the shoddy camera work, is very subpar. While it's understandable that young, relatively unknowns like Colin O'Donohughe appear in this film, but it's surprising that such an accomplished actor like Anthony Hopkins would sign on to something like this.
Acting-wise, there's nothing to write home about, and the storyline has been done many times before. Its one redeeming quality is the setting of The Vatican, which is a city-state in which few films take place and heightens the presence of the Catholic faith that plays a supporting role.
Be that as it may, 'The Rite' is nothing short of dull and dreary, and it cannot compare to similar past efforts in terms of suspense or entertainment value.
