Review of The Right Stuff (1983) by Jeremy F — 03 Feb 2008
In the hands of some directors, the concept of a three-hour epic about the evolution of NASA and the Mercury Program, using a cast of dozens of supporting actors/actresses that each get generous screen time, could prove to be a disaster in the making.
In the hands of Phillip Kaufman, we are presented with a masterful film that has stood the test of time and should be seen at least once by any fan of film. Despite the immense star power in this film, everyone shares the spotlight and every actor has a chance to bring out the essence of the role they play.
This movie plays across genres, bringing the audience moments of ingenious humor along with awe-inspiring moments that make us sit back and take it all in. This movie also goes to show that you can incorporate patriotism into a film without resorting to egomaniacal idolism or frantic flag-waving.
This movie will engross you from begining to end, leaving you with goosebumps and a faint swallow of pride.
