Review of The Rewrite (2014) by Devo K — 28 Aug 2015
The title and plot of this film, of a washed up screenwriter ending up teaching in a college in the back of beyond, is a gift for sneering critics, but that is unfair. The screenwriter was never going to win an Oscar, as the plot was predictable (although I thought it was going to take an altogether more sinister turn at one point), the secondary characters were not well drawn (especially the students - and Alison Janney was wasted, as usual), and the balance and chemistry between was not as strong as it might have been.
But Marissa Tomei was as winning as ever, and Grant has lost none of his ability to deliver a good line with seeming lazy ease. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it at the cinema, but it was a good find on Netflix on a cold wet night.
