Review of The Revisionaries (2012) by Doha Film I — 03 Jun 2012
A documentary covering the push by the Texas School Board to change the curriculum to right-wing ideals. Too dry, all board room meetings.
While the story and the audacity of the titular group are compelling, most of the footage is from cameras in the boardroom meetings. This makes for a bit of a dry narrative. While there are zingers spoken in interviews and amazingly stupid things said by the board members during the meetings (earning some audience laughs), the actual people involved are, perhaps, a bit dull.
The right-wing members of the school board are not made out to be diabolical or conniving, which might be accurate, but this also saps the indignation that might be felt by viewers. I hate to say this, but in this case, being an impartial observer actually works against this subject matter.
Which is too bad, since the whole idea of culture wars front lines is a pretty exciting place to be covering with a documentary.
