Review of The Reverend (2011) by Karl G — 17 Oct 2012

This was obviously a pet project for director Neil Jones and lead actor Stuart Brennan(founding member of the production company).

It's incredibly low budget but has some names that are not unrecongnisable in the UK. Doug Bradley & Rutger Hauer's involvement barely accumulates 10 minutes of screen time between them with the latter not appearing again after the typical comic book adaption style opening credits. Shane Richie & Tammar Hassan also appear as a pimp & crooked business man respectively, Hassan turns his hand here to a Sean Pertwee impression.

The story revolves around a young new reverend who is assigned to a parish located in a particularly run down area. On his his first night he is visited by a young woman who attacks and feasts on him, he retaliates and kills her. Unaware of what he has become, also a mystery to the viewer as it seems he's become a vampire but his actions in daylight seem to contradict this.

So he sets about cleaning up the neighbourhood by use of the bible or any other means necessary.

The effects are particularly shoddy but storywise it's not all that bad if highly unoriginal. To be fair to Brennan he's not all that bad but the film just fails to maintain any interest level. It just gets quite boring and the end can't come soon enough.
