Review of The Revenant (2015) by Daniel G — 13 May 2016
Well Done Leo.
Kinda had to say that. Leonardo DiCaprio does truly deserve that Oscar, partly because he basically tortured himself to get it, but partly because he gives a hyper-realistic performance that plays down all of the inflated cliches in Hollywood. What I mean by this is that all of the big dramatic moments have been made too melodramatic. When whatever his actual name is, let's face it everyone knows him as Leonardo DiCaprio's character's son dies, there is no overplayed drama. There is real pain and anger that I haven't seen in a film for some time. The story of The Revenant isn't about what is told, it's about how it's told. From trying to stop Tom Hardy from killing his son to fighting a bear to that Shotgun attack from the horse!! The Revenant is pretty spectacular, but the audience has to be sophisticated enough to want more than just the classic Hollywood moments.
