Review of The Revenant (2012) by Russ B — 12 Jul 2013
The Revenant is a dark comedy about an Iraq War veteran who dies in combat and then inexplicably returns to the realm of the living as an undead being in need of human blood to live. The film is a very confused mishmash of poorly written supernatural comedy, vigilante action, and a bizarre attempt at horror.
The actors have little script to work with which leads to excessive overacting. There are some baffling social statements about racism blended in which derail the fun of the film. All in all, a lot of the mystical whimsy that should be present is very flat and uninteresting.
Worst of all, the ending of this movie lacks any sense of logic and may be the worst thought-out closure to a film that I have seen in a long time. This film is a waste of time. If you'd like to see an original undead comedy film, watch the supernatural romance Warm Bodies instead.
