Review of The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1995) by Jason D — 15 Oct 2008
There is never a clear line over whether this film is a part 4, or a reboot in the series, but either way you cut it, it's a stinker. Directed by the co-creator, The Next Generation defies the line in Tobe Hooper bizarre and just outright bizarre, with a sloppy story and unclear direction from Henkel (who should know better, seeing as this is his bread and butter).
This film does has the distinction of being the only one to have not 1, but 2 A-list celebrities in major roles. A young, pre-hippy Matthew McConaughey as one of the demented family members, and Renee Zellweger as the boring heroine.
This was finally put out when these two started getting hugely popular, but it still wasn't enough to gain momentum for this sloppy mess. Even Robert Jacks' interpretation of Leatherface is stale and dull.
His eventual death was from an aneurysm, which is very sad, but seriously, I thought I was going to get an aneurysm from watching this!
