Review of The Resident (2011) by Faisal A — 02 Mar 2011
A pretty bad attempt at a real comeback for Hammer horror. Like most of their films, they have style, atmosphere and really good art and set design. What they lost is the sense of narrative and direction. This film is no exception. It is cool to see Christopher Lee back in the company that made him known to the worldwide public, but he doesn't elevate this film to any great lengths.
The film's action is well directed, and there is a good deal of suspense, however the problem with the story is the relationship between the main characters played by Hillary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Its the usual creepy, socially isolated guy falls in love with new girl, and becomes obsessed with her, and doesn't want anything to stop him from getting her.
Too much contrivance, too many cliches and lack of enthusiasm for a potentially good story and film, made me bored about halfway into the film.
