Review of The Rescuers Down Under (1990) by Tina C — 22 May 2008
After viewing the first installment just recently, and though it did not live up to my expectations all that much, I convinced myself to view this sequel. And I have to say, I prefer this sequel over the original.
The first installment was just a little annoying for me. The awful fade outs and that annoying girl who sounded like a four-year-old in a ten-year-old body! This sequel was visually exciting -- especially the early incorporations of CGI animations.
Though tis CGI are not on par with today's, hence the lack of details on buildings and cars, but that was one of the reasons why I chose to view this film. The film's characters were fun, and I noticed it was more "modern" than the previous.
Though one thing bothered me: why did the main human characters sound American while the rest sounded Australian? Bad choice for Disney. I would prefer if everyone in the film sounded Australian, except for the two protagonists, of course.
I also noticed the film did not have any musical numbers, which was fine. It's refreshing to see a Disney animated feature without random singing/dancing sequences. The film's story and plot was alright, but I have to admit, the film did get a little boring toward the end -- the climax.
Overall, there were some good and bad moments, but compare it to the first installment, I would choose this sequel over the other anytime. The film's animation echoes the other animated features that followed this, and the film's editing was a huge improvement from the first installment.
