Review of The Rescuers Down Under (1990) by Jp N — 20 Dec 2011
"The Rescuers Down Under", despite being forgotten, actually trumps a lot of the films of the Disney Renaissance. It wasn't an epic love story and it wasn't a musical. Instead, "The Rescuers Down Under" was an action-packed adventure.
The ambition in this film pretty much slams everything Disney had done in the 1970s and 1980s, and even some of the efforts that came after it. The story works, although it lacks the heart that "The Rescuers" had.
However, the story is a lot more consistent and it isn't as sloppy. The production values are amazing for its time, with great use of computer animation and fine art direction. No sloppy rushed animation either, something the late 1980s-early 1990s films suffered from.
Bruce Broughton's booming score gives the film a very exciting feel. "The Rescuers Down Under" was a film made for animation fans, and it probably didn't do so well because audiences wanted another fairy tale musical from Disney, they probably weren't interested in a sequel to "The Rescuers".
"The Rescuers Down Under" is action-packed, beautifully animated and a whole lot of fun.
