Review of The Rescuers (1977) by Ryne K — 09 Jun 2013
I have not seen seen 'Down Under' in a very long time, but I feel that I may have problems with it, even though it was something I watched to death as a child. But I had never seen this film until now.
Meh...
I liked a few things with the central characters, and the imagination and zaniness of the whole film, which some of the ways people transport around, and the villainous crocodiles etc. But the problem is that the film does strangely drag for an 80 minute film. Which it shouldn't. It's 80 minutes long.
The story is much more traditional, and it seemed that Disney was trying to make something new, without songs being sung by the character, but by a random woman- who is probably represented as the daughters metaphorical Mother, but it just didn't work- mostly because the music was so literal about everything.
The film was made at a time when Disney was tightening up a bit, and it shows as the animation is a bit hit and miss here, where it seemed to be that the ideas were so creative, but the animation was sometimes a bit hazy and messy. It was odd.
I enjoyed it, but it seemed to drag. Kids will like it, even though it could be a little scary. Give me Beauty and the Beast any day.
