Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Burton L — 08 Jun 2007
The age-old dilemma: how long should a woman wait for her man to see that she loves him, before giving up and moving on...this is a classic story of unrequited love within the upper servant class in the British aristocracy, before and after WW2.
Hopkins is brilliant as the professional, emotionally stilted butler, so devoted to his master, but never to himself (or Emma). Emma plays the devoted, frustrated woman, stuck in a profession which offers little personal or emotional satisfaction.
I would love to meet Kazuo Ishiguro, the book author, a man with rare sensitivity and grace.
