Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Melissa P — 08 Nov 2007
"The Remains of the Day" is a film that proves that a story can be both sad and beautiful. Sir Anthony Hopkins shines in his performance as James Stevens, a classic English butler who is so devoted to his job that he neglects some of life's most important issues.
Emma Thompson offers a strong performance of her own as Miss Kenton, the woman who is hired by Mr. Stevens to serve on his staff as housekeeper. Co-stars Christopher Reeve, James Fox, and Hugh Grant turn in memorable performances as well.
All in all, this is a masterfully acted, well-choreographed film that has the power to teach poignant lessons about interpersonal relationships, politics, and professional etiquette. I recommend it for those who love to watch great actors at work.
