Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Buddy K — 06 Mar 2008
The acting from the two leads is pretty good and it's a slow movie. However, the writing and directing make it better and Anthony Hopkins is excellent as Stevens the butler who is loyal and devoted to his master but as a result misses out on the joys of life.
Emma Thompson is equally good as the maid who loves him and knows how to experience life in ways he can't. I'm usually not into "romantic" movies but I thought this was well shot, well acted and different from your average romance and it wasn't all that girly either.
I don't know that I'd watch it again as the ending is a bit of a downer but it was enjoyable.
