Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Eric N — 21 Jun 2008
I love Anthony Hopkins in any movie. This is a haunting film. Requires some serious viewing in order to follow the story and explore the message of the film. Provides some life lessons worth exploring and discussing.
The setting is pre-WWII England in a large mansion of British nobility. The story actually draws from events in history, but the focus is on the servants, of which Hopkins plays the head butler, Thompson the head housemaid. Get the DVD. Emma Thompson's commentary adds incite to both the culture of the servants, as well as to the subtlety of British humor.
