Review of The Remains of the Day (1993) by Spencer S — 12 Apr 2012
In some ways, one of my favorite movies. In other ways not related to the actual quality of the movie, one of the hardest to watch. Unlike Hamlet, who couldn't make up his mind, butler "Stevens" (Anthony Hopkins) is under the impression he's not allowed to have a mind to make up.
As he strives to remain totally professional, his ability to keep his humanness in check is put to the test by employer's (Lord Darlington, played by James Fox) political meetings, and by a housekeeper, Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), who won't let her job get in the way of her living life to its fullest.
..but is something else holding back her joy?
