Review of The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2013) by Meredith W — 12 Jan 2014
"The Reluctant Fundamentalist" is a critique and commentary on post-9/11 paranoia and prejudice. Changez (Riz Ahmed) is a rising star on the political/terrorism scene in Pakistan. He is interviewed by journalist/operative (Liev Schrieber) sent by the CIA to get answers and find a location of a kidnamed American professor.
Changez relates his compelling story, beginning with him pursuing an American education, becoming a successful businessman and finding true love with a New York socialite (Kate Hudson) before it all came crashing down in response to 9/11.
This is a quietly intense film that is often full of suspense, enhanced by excellent performances. I enjoyed it much more than the critically acclaimed novel on which it was based.
