Review of The Relic (1997) by Nick B — 11 Mar 2014
"THE CREATURE IN THE MUSEUM".
- 'The Relic' is a 1997 horror film by Peter Hyams (End of Days, Sudden Death) based on the novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The storyline is best described as 'Predator' meets 'Night at the Museum'. I enjoyed the dark environment of the museum and the creature itself, but the action takes a long time to set in. Very memorable is when a SWAT-team comes in from a window on top of the roof. With Penelope Ann Miller (Kindergarden Cop), Tom Sizemore (Natural Born Killers) and Linda Hunt (The Year of Living Dangerously).
A ship arrives from south America with its crew missing. Lieutenant D'Agosta (Sizemore) from Chicago Police has assigned to investigate the ship. Opening a hatch in the bilge, he finds the bodies of the crew. All have been decapitated.
Shortly after that, two crates that were on the ship are delivered to the Chicago Museum of Natural History. In a couple of days a new exhibition will open and Dr. Ann Cuthbert (Hunt) has her hands full with the many preparations. Biologist Margo Green (Miller) examines the crates that have arrived. In one there's a statue of a mythical monster called Kathoga, but Margo is more fascinated by leaves that are in the other crate. The leaves are covered with a strange fungus. That night the museum's security guard gets murdered. When D'Agosta sees the man is decapitated, he knows that there's some dangerous connection with the deaths on the ship. Who or what is lurking in the dark?
