Review of The Red Violin (1998) by Colm O — 29 Oct 2008
Despite working out the 'plot' about half an hour into the film, I still feel this movie is well worth seeing. The story is basically about the life and journeys of a 16th century Italian violin and the dark tale about how it came to be such a deep red colour.
.. but I've given away too much already! The filmic device of returning repeatedly to the music instrument auction, but from progressively more revealing positions (vis-a-vis the plot), as the story unfolds is a clever one; it builds tension and draws the various strings (sorry, no pun intended!) of the story together.
The music by John Corigliano (played by Joshua Bell) is superb. Watch out also for Joshua Bell in a cameo role; you glimpse him (very briefly) in the front desk of the first violin section at the concert in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford!
