Review of The Red Violin (1998) by Scott R — 08 Jun 2009
A hypnotic, mysterious film. some moments of the film are unclear, and at points the plot seems to lose its flow. the main violin is seen less as an instrument as it is a character - a point around which the entire film revolves.
(on a side note - I only checked this movie out because it allegedly won best original soundtrack over 'american beauty,' and I needed to be the judge. did this film do better? in my opinion, no. the music is mostly ominous and simple, yet at times it is beautiful. overall, though, not enough to challenge thomas newman in my mind).
