Review of The Red Violin (1998) by Daniel K — 25 Sep 2011
3: I've always enjoyed this picture. The intersecting storylines, flashbacks, etc are handled quite, while the concept is brilliant. I only wish there were more films made about the meandering path great works of art, or in this case a famous violin, make through the ages.
Each thread brings something new and different to the story as whole. The music is superb, the performances memorable, the locations/costumes/sets/historical details just right, etc. I can no longer recall whether I figured out what the varnish was made the first time I saw the film, but it no longer matters.
Some will probably find the neat manner in which everything is pulled together at the end a bit too typically Hollywood, but I enjoy it just the same.
