Review of The Red Violin (1998) by Mloy X — 21 Jul 2012
"What do you do when the thing you most wanted, so perfect, just comes?".
--- Charles Morritz (Sam Jackson).
A very unusual perspective beautifully told through the eyes of (basically) the violin itself! Who knew inanimate objects led such complicated and interesting lives. This film had the potential of being ridiculous, even comical, had the execution of film not been so masterful. So kudos to the writers and directors. The film was enthralling from beginning to the end: not a frame wasted, nothing lagged or long, boring, preachy parts even during the kind of "preachy" parts. Visually, the film was a masterpiece! If time travel was possible, it would look like this movie, exactly! Who needs a TARDIS? My only qualms about the film was the last actions of the character Charles Morritz (Samuel L. Jackson). I mean, I completely understand his motives and can also sympathize with his dilemma but I just can't see myself coming to the same resolution. In the end, it just seemed wrong, I guess.
