Review of The Red Cliff (1949) by Jack G — 28 Nov 2009
It's not as if John Woo is now back with Red Cliff better-than-ever, but it's certainly the best action movie he's done since he left China before and went to America to make movies. Some of the dramatic scenes are kind of stiff and conventional (albeit some of the plans like the way to gain lots of arrows is genius), and some of the stuff with Chiling Lin could have been cut from the plot.
But anytime Woo stages an epic- and I do mean EPIC- battle scene, it really turns on. Best non-action scene: when the woman stalls the guy with poisoned tea.
