Review of The Reaping (2007) by Joseph R — 12 Jan 2009
Not sure if it's to this one's credit that it loses you right from the beginning, but The Reaping certainly has a lot of pieces to it's puzzle... and putting them all together proves to be somewhat time consuming. But that said, getting you to ask a lot questions must mean that there is something here to sink your teeth into.
Swank is decent, although across the board the performances are just sort of there. And this film just very may settle for the middle ground. It's not great, but it's not bad either. It just happens to have a good premise, but it feels like it bites off more then it knows what to do with.
There are themes of faith and doubt, science versus religion that prove to be the wanted back bone of this film, and while it is established, it doesn't necessarily concern itself with trying to go into too much depth. I think when it's all said and done it simply wants to be something of a horror film with a bit of philosophical and theological undertones, which given the premise could be a bit of letdown for those looking for more theology then less.
