Review of The Reaping (2007) by Van R — 26 Jun 2009
BLOWN AWAY, LOST IN SPACE, and PREDATOR 2 director Stephen Hopkins pulls out all stops in this slam-bang, religious-oriented horror thriller about 10 Biblical plagues that sweep through a rural Louisiana town.
The river turns red, frogs fall out of the sky, locusts swarm in, lice teem on the heads of children, boils appear on the adults, and just about everything bad that can happen does. A town member recruits an ex-Christian missionary who renounced her faith after her husband and daughter were murdered during a drought in the Sudan and she now makes a living as a professor at LSU who disproves miracles.
Basically, she is like the priests in the EXORCIST movies. What she stumbles onto in this small Louisiana town will give you goosebumps galore. THE REAPING is first rate hokum done up in high style from producer Joel Silver of LETHAL WEAPON and GHOST SHIP fame.
Hilary Swank makes a good heroine and Annasophia Robb is hypnotic as the child who everybody believes in the instrument of the Devil. Stephen Rea has a small supporting role as a Catholic priest.
