Review of The Reaping (2007) by Deb S — 28 Oct 2010
Hilary Swank plays investigator Katharine Winter who stopped believing in holy miracles and God himself after her daughter and husband were mercilessly murdered in Sudan. Her job it is to debunk religious myths with logical scientific explanations and she takes pride in having investigated over 42 occurrences finding 42 scientific explanations for all of them. She's called in to investigate a small town in the Deep South where the river has turned red followed in close order by other Biblical plagues. Of course when she gets there, the rational explanations seem to fly out the window and she starts to slowly realize that not everything can be scientifically proved. While this movie doesn't have a fantastic twist that blows you away, the special effects are okay followed by a good scare or two.
I found the religious theme to be both interesting and different, and the way the ten Biblical plagues were integrated into the story was very clever with good performances from both Hilary Swank and David Morrissey.
