Review of The Reader (2008) by Courtney W — 06 Aug 2010
I watched this movie the same day that I finished reading the book. I knew that was a risk in that it made me more likely to notice small differences between the film adaptation and the novel. The fact that this film stood up to that close of a comparison speaks volumes about its quality.
I'm a huge Kate Winslet fan, and she captured this complex character with her usual bravery. I appreciate that the film stayed true to the book in its discussion of the Holocaust, and didn't use superfluous flashback images to exploit the viewer's emotions.
In this case, the aftermath portrays the horror of the events themselves.
