Now that I've seen it at least four times, I really can't stop thinking, "I wonder what it would've looked like if it was a 100% German production film." The Reader is one of those movies that gives you new clues, and makes you feel something different each time you watch.

It starts out as a love story, then turns into a historical drama that deals with moral conscience and ethical issues. It explores subjects such as repentance, salvation, and righteousness. Kate Winslet gives an award-winning performance as Hanna Schmitz and David Kross is excellent as young Michael.

Ralph Fiennes, though he is brilliant at everything he does, seems miscast as old Michael, however, he delivers a quiet and nuanced performance. You can feel the pain he is carrying through his eyes. It is a beautifully shot and well-made film efficiently directed by Mr.

Daldry. The Reader is poignant and heartbreaking.
