Review of The Reader (2008) by Sue B — 02 Oct 2010
Interesting movie. I wouldn't say that it's a mainstream film, but it clearly stands out. The story requires the viewer to understand beyond what we see in the movie, hence, the book would give more answers for the tension and the unspoken words in the dialogues.
But we have to live with what was presented in the movie. Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes were obviously phenomenal and I guess David Kross is slowly getting to being a good actor. I liked the episodic appearances of the familiar German actors (Alexandra Maria Lara and Volker Bruch), but I find that the books read visually should have been in German rather than English, even if they all spoke English.
Finally, the movie didn't shock me in any way, hence, the rating. But in general, this a smart and a well shot movie deserving its Oscar nominations.
