Review of The Reader (2008) by Himanshu B — 27 Jun 2010
Kate picks up the picture and carries it on her more than capable shoulders throughout. A layered, complex performance which makes you question her motives and yes still empathize with her character, even when it falls.
It doesn't offer any redemption or expiation for the tragic events that are the backdrop for the movie, offering it up not as a much denounced horrifying event (many people have done that to terrifying effect), but as a happening that people struggle to come to terms with, both the perpetrators and the victims.
