Review of The Reader (2008) by Riley B — 18 Jul 2010
This is essentially two movies. The first one is about an affair between a 15-year old boy and an older woman. The second is about that woman being put on trial for her involvement in some Nazi-related activities.
I realize the first part was meant to serve as backstory for the rest of the movie, but it was really executed very poorly imo.The pace of story was really bad imo. It felt too rushed and as a result came off as a little unbelievable to me. There was just no substance there.
Once the movie got going, I thought it was a pretty good film that dealt with some really difficult subject matter. It will make you question things that (most of us) feel are unquestionable. It really makes you think about it.
But when a movie takes 45 minutes to get going, that is huge problem for me.That is a long time to sit around and wait for something to happen.
