Review of The Reader (2008) by Surrinder S — 24 Nov 2010
Interesting story looking at the aftermath of the holocaust from a standpoint of objective humanity. It was well put together but the moral ambiguity that drove the plot made it difficult to relate to the characters.
The main reason that I cannot rate it higher is the first part of the movie. An affair between a teenage boy and an adult is unnerving enough, the gratuitous nudity and sensuality through which they told that part of the story was grotesque. It is statutory rape, not romance. If it is necessary for story, it can be established without the audience having to live through the details.
