Review of The Reader (2008) by Claribel S — 12 Dec 2010
WHOA......
That's the one word that I think sums up this movie. Here's why:
I decided to watch The Reader because I'm a big fan of Kate Winslet and I know she won an academy award for best actress in this film. That was enough to get me to watch this movie.
Don't be fooled. This movie is unlike any other. It is by no means a typical love story or even a typical movie concerning the Holocaust. But don't let these things discourage you from watching it. The Reader is so twisted and cringe-worthy at certain points and yet its so good at the same time. While watching, I couldn't help but be disgusted with Kate's character Hanna but on the other hand, marvel at her incredible acting. Kate Winslet definitely gives an Oscar worthy performance as the sick manipulative older woman and both David Kross/Ralph Fiennes also do an excellent job portraying the affected character Michael.
All in all, this is definitely a movie that is worth seeing. When I finished watching it, I began to think more about the complexity of human nature, which is beautifully portrayed in the film because even the obvious villain of this movie is seemingly multilayered.
