Review of The Reader (2008) by Martin I — 26 Aug 2011
The performances rule this film. It is driven more by character, I believe, than by the somewhat patronising and narrow undertones suggested through the reasons for Hanna Schmitz crimes. The direction is understated and admirable in dealing with the plots failings, yet the script and acting are reassured and; in the case of the later, often marvellous. Although it has disappointing failings, when ignored for favourable attributes, it is at times profound.
