Review of The Reader (2008) by Ilsa L — 19 Nov 2011
A sad, haunting movie about two souls living in deep sin. The Reader is very well made although some might feel confused by the fashback sequences. I was really drawn to this, we're not perfect but evn those who have been guilty in their lives will find ways of being redeemed.
Maybe not the case with Kate Winslet's character but with Michael (Ralph Fiennes) confessing to Ilana (Lena Olin) a concentration camp survivor about his relationship with Winslet and her dark past.
The ending is moving but it feels like a flaw since taking Winslet's character's cash would feel more like taking blood money. In The Reader the audience simply have no choice but to feel empathy and feel thankful.
