Review of The Reader (2008) by Rachel H — 05 Apr 2012
I found this movie did exactly what it set out to make people do.... THINK! While the first half is about a young boy's affair with an older woman, the second half is about where our different paths lead us.
However, I feel that both parts of the movie focus on the choices we make, and how our actions affect others. It was extremely sad, and I thought Winslet's performance was excellent. This movie made me ask a lot of questions, and while I will never advocate the persecution of the Jews, this also made me look at it from the side of the Germans.
As he said in the movie 'Everyone knew, and everyone did nothing'. So who is really to blame? Those that were there, or those that did nothing. The Holocaust was a time when no one was blameless (with the exception of the Jews).
As you can see, this film encouraged very strong feelings within me, and for that reason, this was a fantastic piece of cinema.
