Review of The Reader (2008) by Michelle A — 12 Oct 2013
Saw this at the cinema, I was on a 'hot date' at the time and didn't really pay enough attention so didn't really rate it but after seeing it again I changed my mind completely. Kate Winslet is brilliant as always, she plays the cold hearted illiterate german lady who is more ashamed of not being able to read or write than killing 300 Jews.
I didn't know how to feel towards her, she obviously has some issues from her past as we never see her in contact with anyone other than Michael. I didn't want to feel sorry for her but I couldn't help it.
She did show remorse near the end but I found it quite disturbing how she sat in court and from the look on her face when she was explaining what they had done didn't seem to realise it was wrong.
Angered me that those bitches let her take the flack and got away with a few lousy years. Michael is another peculiar human, never was able to let go after spending that one summer together when he was a teen.
Slow moving in parts but captivating.
