Review of The Reader (2008) by Josè M — 20 Feb 2014
Finally, a movie that deals with the Holocaust that gets past the horror of it and tries to get at how we were going to have to come to terms with it. Yes, "What was the Holocaust?" is an important question; however, it is only the first.
Once you understand what it was, you have to ask "why did it happen?" and "How was it allowed to happen?" This would then lead into questions regarding who approved of it, who knew of it, who was guilty, and, if there is guilt in silence, was anyone truly innocent.
Essentially, the movie tries to examine how one generation tries to forget, while the next generation won't allow them to, in fact, can't move past the guilt of the Holocaust until they have dealt with the atrocity of it all.
Anyway, the book was better than the movie, but that's probably due to books being a better media for thought provoking experiences.
