Germany in 1958, 1966 and the 90's. 36-yr old illiterate female Auschwitz guard (played by Kate Winslet) with a penchant for having someone read to her had a summer fling with a 16-yr old boy in 1958.

Fast forward 8 yrs to the same young man in law school auditing what turned out to be her trial. He started sending her tapes of books he used to read to her & they became her lifeline. In prison she taught herself to read & write but committed suicide just before her release from prison 22 years later.

The young man, in time, grew up to become an emotionally distant person.
