Review of The Reader (2008) by Mark M — 05 Dec 2012
This was a great film and I think a great love story, albeit very unconventional. Kate Winslet gives a very powerful performance as a former SS guard who has a summer long love affair with a teenage Michael who she refers to only as "kid".
Michael discovers that Hannah loves being read to. Hannah disappears one day leaving Michael confused and heart-broken. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hannah as one of the defendants.
Winslet received a well deserved 6th Oscar nomination for this role. Playing what amounts to a monster, we see that they too are human because although Hannah is accused of horrific crimes, I could not help feeling sorry for her.
Not many actresses could bring this off, but it may be her greatest accomplishment to date.
