If you watch this as a "hollywood" movie, it's pretty bad. If you watch it as a "Japanese" movie, it's not that bad. For me, it was actually quite refreshing watching a movie that was made for the West with an extremely realistic portrayal of Japan, but I suppose not everyone would appreciate that "natsukashii" feeling ^.
