Review of The Rains Came (1939) by Keat S — 27 Jul 2011
I had to see the movie that beat out the Oscar of special effects for Wizard of Oz's cyclone and Gone with the Wind's burning of Atlanta. And this movie's flash flood was impressive for its time.
That said, I found the characters very shallow with wooden portrayals from the actors. I mean if you had just drank from a diseased cup and realized you were going to die, I doubt you would act as subdued as our leading lady.
It's overall entertaining as far as an old movie goes, but I side with the Academy in that all it deserved was an award for impressively flooding the set.
