Review of The Rainmaker (1997) by S V — 19 Jul 2004
While it is difficult for a movie to remain completely faithful to the book from which it was adapted, I thought some parts of this film seemed a bit rushed. Most likely it did not want to be side-tracked by the subplots and preferred to remain focused on the main storyline (plaintiff vs defendant Great Benefit.
) If you've read the book, the movie will feel incomplete, but that's often the case for any movie that's adapted from a book. There's just no time to include everything without sacrificing style, and as someone mentioned, a mini-series would probably have been best to achieve completeness.
Still it is one of the best adaptations ever made of a John Grisham novel. It is sleek, suspenseful, and well-acted, and has the ability to bring out the emotions of the viewer without being too sappy.
