Review of The Rainmaker (1997) by Jarrod L — 08 Mar 2008
A well-executed but standard bit of courtroom drama courtesy of John Grisham. It's one of the better examples of late-era Coppola, but seems awfully lightweight for the guy who gave us The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
The biggest problem, I suppose, is that Coppola's a man with great vision and this feels like it could have been made by any competent director. You've seen the basic plot elements dozens of times before, so the cast is what makes the movie.
Matt Damon, who was not quite a name actor yet, is a very likeable lead and he gets some good support from Danny DeVito and Mickey Rourke.
