Review of The Railway Man (2013) by Mark S — 17 Jan 2014
Considering it's based on an extraordinary true story, this film is ultimately a bit formulaic. Nicole Kidman is given very little to do and Colin Firth is outshone by Jeremy Irvine. It's all a bit one-note and too much of the relatively short running time is spent drumming home the brutality of the torture that Eric Lomax suffered in a Japanese labour camp, so that there isn't much time left to learn about the characters on screen.
