Review of The Railway Man (2013) by J T — 23 May 2014
A different approach to a subject already broached in Bridge on the River Kwai or Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. This is very much more personal and, thus, intimate, and deals with the aftermath of such a nightmare.
Exceptional cast. True to his personality, the main character remains remote throughout. His resolving catharsis is uncomfortably distant and hard to relate to and fully understand. A little more insight would have been helpful here.
Bottom line: Reticent cinema.
