Review of The Railway Man (2013) by David P — 23 May 2014
A powerful story with some excellent acting. However the ending lacked some of the cathartic impact it was seeking. The wartime POW scenes were the best, reminding viewers how cruel and brutal the Japanese were.
That alone was worthwhile in our PC era that assumes moral equivalence among all nations and cultures. This made me skeptical of the old translators plea for forgiveness. If I was Eric, I'd still want revenge.
..at least as I saw it on the screen. Perhaps a better screenplay would have worked out issues of culpability and redemption than this one did.
