The Quiet American is loyal enuff for Graham Greene's book to merit four stars. I share Greene's worldview. Other people are just fundamentally bad and fail you as soon as they can, particularly women do.

Well, there I may have to disagree with Graham. Anyway, in the movie there's Caine's character, Fowler, a long-time newspaper correspondent in Indochina. He leads modest life with his Vietnamese mistress, and is pretty content with the state of affairs.

But the state of affairs is about to change. The Americans enter the picture in terms of, well, of aid. And so does Pyle (Fraser) who takes an instant crush to Caine's mistress. And, as an opportunist she, or her sister, makes her to choose Pyle over Fowler.

When the Pyle's true character is revealed to Fowler, he makes his move thru his Vietnamese contacts, and Pyle ends up as a star in the wall of Langley. La vendetta é un piatto da consumare freddo.

.. I don't quite remember why the name of the book was "The Quiet American". Maybe he was quiet FOR an American. Maybe it was what he did. Be that as it may, the title of the movie could be just anything, not The Quiet American, given that the meaning of The Quiet American is not dealt with one way or another.

Oh, this is difficult. I suppose the flicks should be judges by their own merti, fully detached for the original novel, but I cannot make suh a detachment. But I live along with Fowler, so in the end, me, Fowler, and Greene get our vendetta.

Sweet!
